Session: Promising Practices for Uplifting, Teaching and Empowering our Black Males Workshop Description
In this session Brothers Jones and Taylor will present two youth oriented programs they are currently engaged in delivering. They are seeking to engage and encourage brothers to become more involved in changing the direction that many of our young men are heading. In addition, they will present the opportunity for us to hear from a few of our young men who are directly affected by the current challenging social, physical and academic environments they encounter daily. This session will be experiential and interactive. (Description)

Facilitator: Bro. Walter L. Taylor, 2 Zeta Alpha Alpha '84 Walter L. Taylor Jr. was born and raised in Roxbury, Massachusetts and as a youth attended both public and private schools, attending Boston University for one year in 1975 at the School of Management. After that year he realized that Business was not his passion and took time to ‘find himself’. Walter returned to college to pursue a degree in Social Work at Longwood College in rural Farmville, Virginia, where he also entered the Brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi in 1984. Walter returned to Boston in 1985 as a social worker for youth committed to the Department of Youth Services as wards of the state and also became an active member of Gamma Chapter. He continued working with and mentoring at risk youth and gangs until 1989, when he ventured to Los Angeles California. Walter then focused on working with the dually diagnosed homeless, people with HIV/AIDS, de-institutionalizing people in mental hospitals and reintegrating them into the community as an Independent Living Skills Specialist and coordinating substance abuse treatment for parolees in various initiatives and settings in LA. In 2003 Walter was given the opportunity to develop and manage a Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program in Los Angeles and San Francisco for Walden House, which is a progressive, community-oriented Behavioral Health agency that focuses on assisting people with rebuilding their lives. Since developing the Brighter Futures Mentoring Program, Walter has been an outspoken advocate in the mentoring movement throughout Los Angeles and the Administration for Children and Families in Washington DC. Walter currently sits on the Los Angeles Children’s Planning Council in SPA 6 the most disenfranchised areas of Los Angeles- South Central, Compton and Watts. Walter recently registered a new business venture of social action entitled The Empowerment Foundation, whose mission is to mentor our youth across the country and empower them and mentors to achieve their dreams and become competent, healthy, happy and successful. Walter’s personal credo is that “There are only two types of people – those who are part of the problem and those who are part of the solution.”
